2000.06.05 it's not what you think:

just ran across an interesting tidbit on my daily surf–amiga.org–about the fact that Amiga (Yes, they're still around…), along with Sun, Intel, Motorola, Espial, and maybe some others are about to launch a new Java developer's portal called devicetop.com. it's nice to see that the new Amiga is running with such high-profile buddies. before now, I haven't mentioned my Amiga fetish, but it was bound to come out sooner or later, so I figured now was as good a time as any. If half of what Amiga are promising comes true, things could get very interesting in the computer and consumer electronics worlds.

one interesting thing came out in the press release for devicetop.com that gave me pause. I'm really fond of the english language, and really enjoy when people do weird things with it. down towards the bottom of the page, after several miles of comments about "smart devices" and "information appliances," there's a comment about this joint initiative for widespread use of Java (portable programming technology, as if you didn't know) in these devices. they use the term "device agnostic" to describe a piece of software.
correct me if I'm wrong, but agnostic generally describes ignorance of the existence of (usually God, or a higher power). so what they're talking about is software that is ignorant of the existence of the hardware on which it is run…. I suppose it makes sense, but it really struck me odd. kind of attributes the properties of self-awareness and the capability for doubt on these so-called "smart devices." perhaps that's what makes them so "smart."

well. that was really pointless. thought I was going somewhere with that, but it just kind of fizzled out.

which reminds me of a discussion I just had with brian (the guy who writes stuff over there writing a lot…). because it's been this way for so long, I second guess myself and don't say what I want to say. apparently I don't have that problem here (when I actually bother to write something, I tend to ramble).

for those of you asking, yes, I will shut up now.

2000.06.04 i am not an internet junky:

it's been a couple days since my last post, sorry 'bout that. Life has progressed as it always does, and despite what's been going on, I've been pretty much wordless. still am, in fact.

one thing I've realized is that despite the amount of time I spend "online," I am not an internet junky. I don't have to find a new interesting site every day to keep myself happy. I go to the same sites, day after day, check my email like three or four times a day, and that's about the extent of it. this realization has also made me wonder about the point of this weblog thing–to be interesting, I imagined I must throw up some funky, weird links with every post. well, fuck that. I'm not a link collector really, though I've been trying. most of the sites I visit are functional or purely informational sites that either a) most people probably already know about, or b) most people probably wouldn't care about. maybe I'm just lazy.

for the shameless self promotion section of this post, I'll point out that I finally finished the online version of my first poetry book, which you can happily view at coffeemonk.com. enjoy.

don't you hate it when, despite the fact that you've had an enjoyable, relatively uneventful day, you suddenly get totally depressed about something you can' t even pinpoint or put words to? perhaps it's dissatisfaction with my life, my current situation, the fact that I'm still unemployed even though the manager at Kinko's told me she'd call me on Monday (as in, this past Monday). well, moanin and crying isn't going to make it any better. perhaps I'll post something more upbeat tomorrow.
read my poetry. (that was not a request)

2000.06.04 a volatile arrangement:

back home from bloomington, where i got to see the casket lottery. they played a new song tonight, and it was suitably amazing. i feel like a total fucking nerd. i'm quickly realizing that they are my favorite active band. as long as the police don't get back together anytime soon, they've got the title in the bag…

let's give it up for small brown bike, as well. they always rock, and i'm looking forward to seeing them again at the bloomington fest.

i've come to realize that i have nothing important to say to anyone. goodnight.

2000.06.03 compliment my negative space:

i really wish good things would happen. i'm living in a din of unhappiness. and i really can't stand how mopey and "the cure" i sound.

on a lighter note, shanghai noon was a really fucking good movie. no shit. jackie chan is still amazing…

i'm off to bloomington tomorrow to see the casket lottery. that might cheer me up.

i wish that my wish would hurry up and come true.

2000.06.02 the day after:

the power went out at my apartment yesterday. true it was from my negligence to post the bill to get it paid on time, but i've come to realize that i don't like living with the people i live with. i hope that i can move out and salvage any chance of a friendship from this hindenburg of living arrangements…

don't worry, the power has been paid for and we're patiently (some of us, anyway) waiting for the switch to be flipped.

hopefully i'll have a better weekend than the end of my week. i've got a cool little trip to bloomington, so that should make giant steps toward making me a happier person.

no links that i can think of at the moment…the transmission3000 redesign will probably hit sometime next week. i know i'm always putting shit off, but when you don't have power, you can't design websites.

2000.06.01 seven questions with sebastian stirling:

brian: why did your parents name you sebastian?
sebastian: I think it had something to do with the fact that it means "Child of mammoth ass-kicking potential" in Italian.

the beatles or the stones?
That's a tough one, espcially without the third option of "Foghat" which generally goes with the question. Those two bands are influential, well loved, and critically renowned, but they didn't write "Slow Ride," and aren't classified as "Boogie Rock" in the All Music Guide, so I'm going to have to go for Foghat on this one.

are you an "indie prick" or a "wussy emo boy?"
That's a fairly easy question, seeing as my column is named "Indie Prick Digest," but I have been known to cry at Meg Ryan movies. Oh shit, that was Western Homes, nevermind. I'm 100% indie prick.

you really liked jar jar, didn't you?
Just because I bought a lot of Jar-Jar merch and talked like him to annoy my friends doesn't mean I liked him. Does it?

if you came in 3 flavors, what would they be?
Three flavors. Hm.
First off would have to be Pineapple Coca Krispees, as the juxtaposition of a fruit I hate and a chocolatey cereal I love would definitely give an insight to my inner turmoil. And make people vomit profusely.
The second one might have to be White Oprah flavor, since I don't know what it would taste like, but it scares me to the core, and that would emulate the frightening, unknown part of my psyche.
The third and final would be something nice, like Diet "Cleansing" Sprite, which has a touch of lemon-lime, and starts to burn your mouth if you swish too long.

question #6…what's up with that one chick?
The one on Ricki today? I don't know man. She was freakin' out. Take a chill pill, woman, you're on national television. Her sister was rather huge too. Like a White Oprah.

last question…who is the father of scully's baby?
Me. You might think it would be aliens or Mulder, but I had a cameo once as "Father of Scully's baby," and they let me go buck wild.

[you can now get your lovin' spoonfull of sebastian every day at signal drench. remember to tell him to lay off of the bon-bons…]
