2002.08.16 the older you get, the less you're worth:

scott and i ended up watching dogtown and z-boys last night. it's an awesome movie, and i highly recommend it to anyone who has any interest in skateboarding, whatsoever. they set the jay adams part up to be so sad, but you never figure out why its such a bummer until the very end of the movie. there's a whole generation of kids out there that think that skateboarding began with tony hawk…

not much else has been going on. just work and other such nonsense. i skipped yet another show last night (second story man…sorry guys)…i just don't feel like going out, lately. it's a sickness. i'm sure i'll get over it. especially considering it's friday and i'm off tomorrow. looks like an opening to party if i've ever seen one…

i have to leave for work in seven minutes…

the kentucky state fair started last night. i've decided i want to get a bunch of people together, hit the beer tent, get loaded, and then wander around the fair. something tells me all the retarded redneck bullshit will be a hell of a lot more entertaining at that point.

time to scoot to work…

2002.08.15 buy more drinks!:

woohoo!

man, last night was fun. as paul already explained, the 25 cent rock'n'roll spectacularrrrr went really well.

Old Man had a great set to kick off the night, and everybody seemed to be digging it. It was good to finally get to see them onstage again, after walking in and out on them during practices at the house. besides, when they're playing in the house, i don't get to enjoy their sarcastically witty (or wittily sarcastic) stage banter.

Green Formica Table took the stage and proceeded to blow the doors off. i can't say enough about these guys. i just love 'em. Now, some people i know don't really like them because of some of the atonal chord/note structures and progressions, but i love it. love it love it. some of the stuff they were doing onstage was just making me giggle with glee.

then there was us–the prick, or, as the LEO misspelled it, Lucisigious Prick. "the band of many misspellings", as Paul so eloquently put it. i think leading up to the show (before we took the stage) i was more nervous this time than at our last show. in fact, by the time we started, i was literally just feeling weak and exhausted. it was all alright though, i didn't fall over or have my knee give out on me or anything like that. and, once we got started playing and got through the first song, i was perfectly at ease and enjoying myself. i had a blast. it was also great to get such a good reaction to our new songs (the only ones we've played publicly without first soliciting our friends' opinions).

all in all, it was a great night. good turnout, good audience participation, excellent performances from the bands, and everybody was having fun.

there was the whole thing with the bartender "threatening" to shut down the bar because they weren't making enough money, but the audience really came through when the call was made–"buy more drinks!"

i can't wait 'til next time.

2002.08.14 i can't forgive:

i've spent most of my day off doing a whole bunch of nothing. when you do so much nothing, you generally don't have much to post about…

my hey mercedes review has been posted at 75 or less. that's something, right? expect the queens of the stone age review whenever the damn record finally comes out…

this game is completely addictive. it is also insanely maddening. it's hard to find a game that makes you want to punch our computer, yet you can't stop playing the fucking thing.

remember those plans i had to go to chicago to see hot snakes? well…it looks like the show isn't actually until next week. i jumped the gun, and because i was so ill prepared, i may not have those days off work. oops. you should still go check out their site. it's an awesome flash extravaganza.

for some reason i keep listening to ludacris.

i discovered that one of my favorite bands may be breaking up…the casket lottery is going on "hiatus" soon. we all know what that means…

at the drive-in is still on hiatus, if you catch my drift.

time to go lay around and do some more nothing…

2002.08.13 can't explain:

it's been a couple of days since i've updated, so i figure i better get on the ball…

i had to open the store today. one thing i've just come to realize is…coffeeshops open really fuckin' early. this is also bad when you try to force yourself to go to bed at a reasonable hour when you're not really tired. i tossed and turned and don't remember getting any actual sleep until right before my alarm clock went off at 5:45am. i only know this because i remember seeing the clock and realizing i had 15 more minutes to "sleep," and i was dreaming when the alarm sounded. i guess i can't think of a better job to be working at that hour of the morning, though…all the free espresso you can ram through your system. i topped it all off with a bagel and i was actually functioning. the one thing that makes my job easily bearable is all the good lookin' ladies i work with. it's like my own little slice of heaven.

so i was off relatively early today. i took my grandmother some fresh ground coffee, hung out for lunch, and then headed home and fell straight into a nap. i feel quite refreshed and i'm looking forward to my day off tomorrow. hopefully it's not all overcast and rainy like it is today…

2002.08.10 can't put out the fire that resides in you:

my only complaint with my new job is that the training days are incredibly short. it suckss to get up so early on a saturday morning to go in for only a couple of hours. oh well. i jump started my work schedule by picking up a bunch of shifts next week. that should get me back in the swing of things.

next week is also hot snakes in chicago. i have a couple of friends that were wanting to go…hope they're still up for it.

last night matt and i went out to kinko's to print flyers for their upcoming show (next week? i think so…) and ended up at steak and shake eating some seriously greasy food (the only way to go!). i made tentative plans to meet him up at the back door a little later in the evening, but when i showed up there for my brief appearance, he wasn't there yet. i ended up rolling up to cahoots to find john to give him the copy of the make-up show i burned for him. the exchange ended up going a little something like this:

me: i brought you something…
john: what's this…?
me: that make-up show you were wanting…
john: holy shit! you're awesome!
random girl john was talking to: the make-up? wow…lemme see…
john (ignoring girl): come on, man…let's take this out to my car…

take note: cool cds of live music will make john ignore women. i think it's about the only thing that can cause that reaction.

tonight irina is playing their last show for a while. phil is going to russia for four months, so you better believe i'll be there with bells on. they'll have copies of the stuff they recorded a few months ago…expect a review soon.

time to go enjoy my saturday…

2002.08.09 ah-iggit, blah:

well, i did get the car back. and it does now stop without making any noises. if anyone's ever wondered what the price of silence is, i can easily tell them that it's about $1,400.00. bleh.

hm. i think i'm going to do the unthinkable… follow up two really long and (arguably) interesting posts with a really short lame one.

in case anyone was wondering… those permalinks (the little "PL" in the author line following each post) are now working again. apparently, i did something when converting this site to PHP (yes, that long ago) that broke the permalinks. well, they're working again. so, grab some PL's and link your happy asses off.

er something.

speaking of PL's, (only, backwards) Lucifigous Prick (have i told you this already?) has another show lined up this coming week, with none other than the inimitable Old Man (featuring the illustrious puffin), and the irreplaceable Green Formica Table (who i've mentioned previously). go to http://www.lucifigousprick.com/ for more info on the show. flyers and the like will be up on the site as soon as i can grab a spare 15 minutes to whip together some downloadable versions of the designs.

again, i say bleh. it's been that kind of week.

2002.08.09 sour face reflected in metal:

it seems like i've been slacking off and only updating about every other day. i need to work on that. the truth is, though, that not much is really going on. i stayed home the last two nights (stayed home?! in the middle of the week?! unheard of!) and i start my new job in a little over two and a half hours. nothing really that exciting, i guess. maybe i should take up a daring hobby…like juggling flaming chainsaws.

i've written a couple more reviews for 75 or less. they should see the light of day sometime next week. i reviewed the newest queens of the stone age and the hey mercedes weekend ep. i'll link 'em up when they get posted.

last night scott paid a visit to our local kroger to score some flame-grilled burgers and other various provisions. instead of coming back with the normal a1 sauce, he decided to pick up the a1 extra spicy or some business. it has tabasco in it. we had a few burgers, remarked that it was quite tasty and just a tad spicy (meaning not really at all), and called it an evening. this morning…i'm still tasting that shit. and it's not nearly as good as it was going down. as far as i'm concerned, i think i'll stick with the regular a1, thanks.

now i need to go hit the shower…

2002.08.07 i'm loyal to my king of pain:

another wednesday comes and goes. everything would have been standard (get up…feed the cat…hang out with matt at denny's), but i got thrown a big ol' curveball today: i finally scored a job. i start friday. i am headed towards removing myself from the list of people that are just a drain on society. my blood alcohol levels will soon be back up to normal levels. hallelujah!

and then i went and hung out with matt at denny's.

i ended up going out with my friend jessica, last night. we walked her dog up and down bardstown road, just generally enjoying the nice weather. after a brief stint of watching the puppy (a six month old husky hardly looks like a "puppy"), i decided that i definitely need to get myself one. without a doubt, huskies are total chick magnets. what girl can resist the pull of a big, cute, playful puppy? not many, i assure you. men of the world: get puppies. you will thank me soon afterward.

if you have a website of your own, with your own little webserver and all that, i'm sure you can identify with me when i say that i hate people that link images off my site and use them on their own site. if it's not an image i (or matt) created and you like it that damn much, download it and upload it to your own damn server. most certainly don't leave your email address off your site so that i can't email you and tell you what a shithead you are. that's called bandwidth theft, and it makes you an asshole. we had this problem, just recently. matt and i solved it in a devious little way that we were both very pleased with. that is all.

2002.08.06 life sucks:

so, yeah, life sucks.

it's like this: a few months ago (you might remember) i took my car in to get the brakes (and some other things) worked on. well, when i got the car back, i heard some noises coming from the brakes when i used them. i, in my limitless ignorance, just assumed that the new brakes had to get "broken in" or something. i fully intended to take the car back to the shop to have them tell me what they did wrong, but i had neither the money nor the time consecutively at the right moments so that i could. long story short, i'm riding around on crappy brakes for a couple months, marveling at the grinding noises of metal on metal at each stop.

cut to: last sunday night.
after a lengthy somewhat frustrating band practice, our hero and his cohort are in a red toyota tercel driving down a side street towards a circular intersection. as they approach the stop sign, our hero begins to apply his brakes. his foot promptly reaches the floor of the car, (SFX: "clunk, thump") which keeps moving with no loss of speed. frantic brake pumping ensues, and the vehicle rolls to a stop just a hair past the stop sign.

Matt: (dripping sarcasm)
"well, that was interesting."

Brax: (concern & confusion)
"what happened?"

Matt: (disgusted)
"the brakes just went out."

Brax: (more concern)
"went out?"

Matt: (more disgust, mixed with incredulity)
"totally. out. gone."

Brax: (concern increasing)
"what are you gonna do? can we make it home?"

Matt: (determined, still disgusted)
"yeah. we'll make it home ok. i've still got the emergency brake."

pull back through driver's side window to shot of car moving slowly down an incline and away from the (stationary) camera.

2002.08.05 they're out ta get me:

well, it was bound to happen…i didn't have a single bit of fun at kickball yesterday. maybe it was my foul mood to start with, who knows? john has been mentioning that i spent the entire weekend pissed off and i kept telling people to not worry about it. i figure i'd have to know what i'm pissed about to be able to discuss it, right?

anyhowways…john and i ended up getting fed up with kickball and ditched out. we were walking around the neighborhood around his house when we stumbled upon this movie shoot in progress. there's been a movie shooting here for the past couple of weeks, and john seems to know everyone working on the set. we hung out for a while while they shot a couple of scenes taking place in a copy store. i was standing around being cool and some chick that's in the movie that was also on that show roswell was standing right there. i played it cool, took part in a conversation that included the few people we were standing with. nothing too exciting. regardless…they've been filming all over town and i'm angling to actually be in it. we'll see how it works out.

elizabeth and i hung out and watched wet hot american summer last night and we'll probably end up watching some other movie later tonight. my life: music and movies.

and not much else.
