2003.03.16 she's just a woman:

i finished william gibson's latest novel, last night. i ended up reading more than half the book in one day. now i'm just hoping that he decides to turn it into a three book cycle like the last two (cycles) he's written. i'm stuck wondering what the hell happened to wingrove pollard.

and since he's my favorite author on the planet (no light statement), i figure i'll link up his own personal blog-thing. he updates it way more than i update this thing, that's for sure.

Pattern Recognition rocks! I was psyched to pick it up on general principles (it was written by Gibson), and amazed upon reading it (the hype is on point – best since Neuromancer, if'n ya ask me, which nobody did). I love the fact that even though Gibson isn't really dealing in sci-fi here, his prose has an absolutely otherworldly feel to it – he makes commonplace, everyday events seem fantastic (in the old-school sci-fi way).

I'd point out that hardly any of the content of Pattern Recognition qualify as "commonplace, everyday events."

I agree that it's an amazing book, but i have a particular love for the Bridge Trilogy that will never be diminished…

Well, no – that is true. But I'm talking about his essential prose, about when characters are looking at logos and brands on their daily walks (which, well, Cayce does a lot), or just walking around in the market (admittedly, this is a market in London, which makes it very uncommonplace for me as well)… Gibson's descriptions of what's going on moment to moment peel away the familliar, and make even the Michelin Man (Bibendum!) seem alien and new. While the plot is as far-out as the best X-files material, it all seems like it could happen, as if there really is this amazing shadow world beneath the veneer of everyday events. I mean, it really seems like there SHOULD be something like The Footage floating around out there on the net.
