today has been officially declared "get a fucking job day." i set out a little later than i planned to, but it looks like i've got a few prospects. i plan to get something at a restaurant at night and maybe a coffeeshop in the morning or something. i also have a possibility lined up for next month which would be a lot more lucrative, i think. but to be honest…anything would be more lucrative than what i have at the moment, which is a big bunch of nothing.
anyone want to hire a down on his luck graphic designer? anyone? bueller?
last night was a low key night of hanging at at cahoots with elizabeth. we ran into raymon and ended up hanging out and chatting for a while. we called it a night pretty early. it's nice to have a completely unexciting night every now and then.
tonight i'll probably meet up with matt for some comics and denny's and then it's movie night with elizabeth. tonight's selection is the hitchcock classic, north by northwest. should be a whiz bang delightful evening of…very little activity. ahhh…sweet nothing.
my life the unexplainable, neverending party:
last night scott and i took it upon ourselves to scour the kitchen until it was almost shiny new. this took a long time, but those who know what it was like before we claim that we pulled off some sort of minor miracle. after we got done with that, we decided to take the basketball and shoot around at one of the courts nearby, just to get some air. we hung out and made a few shots and missed a hell of a lot more, when we decided to head home and fire up the grill. after some tasty flame grilled gardenburgers, we decided to loaf around the house and be lazy. i mean, shit…we got a lot done, so why not relax?
that's when the phone started ringing. a few people called me and started asking what "everyone" was getting into, that evening. this is really funny, considering how out of the loop i try to stay, sometimes. i informed a couple of friends that scott and i were just relaxing around the house. this ended up turning into an invite for a few friends to come over and drink. so a couple of girls and a couple of guys ended up over at the house, getting drunk and playing strip poker. everyone was a real trooper and sat around completely naked except for one party pooper, but i guess you can't win 'em all.
after that we sat around playing a favorite drinking game of our's: drink while you think. this only lasted until the neighbors decided we were getting too rowdy and started beating on the walls. some people just can't get into a bunch of screaming drunkards at 3:30am, i guess. how lame can you get? so faced with the prospect of having to be quiet (a near impossibility, considering how drunk a couple of us were), we decided to go crash a pool at a nearby apartment complex.
considering that we started off the evening getting naked, i guess it's no stretch of the imagination to figure out what went down once everyone got to the pool. nightswimming, indeed. so we drank more, swam some, and hung out in the hot tub (hey…if you're gonna crash a pool, make sure it's a good one). scott ended up disappearing and i went to go looking for him i was about to swim under the divider that seperates the inside portion of the pool from the outside when i saw the flashlight beams and scott making a mad dash to swim back inside. apparently our party was getting crashed a little early. one of our friends was stuck out there and had to scrunch up against the side of the pool, half submerged, just barely staying out of the line of sight. we all hid out in the hot tub until the flashlights went away and our other friend was able to make his way in and give the all clear. needless to say, we got the hell out of dodge.
it's not summer if you're not out causing a maximum amount of trouble. let the good times roll…
another sunday, another intense game of kickball. i've come to the conclusion that bitching, beer drinking and shit-talk is as much a part of the game as the actual runs scored and dazzling catches made in the outfield. today's game was only the second time that i've been on a losing team, this season. i did end up making some good defensive plays, redeeming myself for a dropped catch by turning it into a double play at second. i was pretty stoked, to say the least. i got on base a couple of times, but never crossed home plate. you win some, you lose some.
we didn't cook out today. i don't really know what the particular reason was, but i think it involved the fact that rob's car wasn't working and jeremy (his roommate) was in the studio, recording his parts for the upcoming second story man record. this left rob with the dilemma of taking only what he could carry on his bike to the park (roughly pronounced "the kickball"). we made due. we hit the field and played until the sun was a distant memory. if we could ever get the damn parks department to turn the lights on after dark at the softball field, we'd be able to keep the season going well into the fall. once again…win some, lose some.
after the game i skipped the usual trek to the dark star (a local bar that caters heavily to the hippie crowd) for the usal $4 pitcher boozefest, and opted to hang out and home and take it easy. scott had pretty much the same idea, passing out on the couch right around midnight.
i forgot to mention that scott's band (telavet) played their last show friday night. it was a damn good show, surrounded by friend of the band and art. it kinda seemed like they ran out of steam towards the last half of the set, cramming in some not-so-frequently-played numbers, but that's definitely forgivable. you should head over to the telavet site and download some of the demos and such. they were damn good, even for one of those dastardly instrumental bands.
two posts in two days…let's see if i can get back on a normal schedule…
last night i went up to cincy with some friends to catch hey mercedes on their closest stop to louisville on their current tour across the usofa. sadly, we arrived too late to catch koufax, which was a big downer. i did see rob-dog and we hung out and shot the shit for a little while. he's really excited about their new record that they just recorded. the record, by all accounts, is fucking great, so i'm looking forward to hearing it.
piebald played a great set, which made me wonder why i've avoided buying their records for so long. a friend from boston sent me one of their early records a few years ago, and i was thoroughly unimpressed. then again…he sent it when i was in a phase of listening to nothing but pink floyd and neurosis…maybe i didn't give them a fair shake. regardless, they played a great set and i'm sure i'll end up picking up a record of their's in the near future.
hey mercedes rocked the house, as usual. they played all the hits and pulled out some stuff from the new ep, as well as a song i had never heard before. classy. after the show we hung out for a while on the bus, just shooting the shit and drinking whatever was within arm's reach. dan made me feel guilty because i never update this crazy little site, mostly due to my own laziness. so as i told him last night over "cold ones"…this post is for my man kan deehn. hopefully i'll catch up with them tuesday in chicago…
much ac/dc and jawbox was listened to, mike tried to get bob to be a hey mercedes underwear model, etc…the usual shenanigans. now i'm home, waiting for 6:30 to roll around so i can go to the park for the weekly cookout/kickball festivities. you have to love the weekends…
it seems i keep wanting to post whenever blogger decides to be uncooperative. well…now i'm taking that wild plunge, hoping that everything comes out okay…
the fourth of july was a pretty eventful holiday. i spent most of the evening hanging out at a friend's warehouse party, getting thoroughly trashed. i was there from about 9:30 until around 3am. we capped the night by crashing a pool at some apartment complex. a perfect finish to a hot, alcohol fueled night. i woke up the next morning feeling like death warmed over after it had been frozen and beaten with a hammer. it probably had something to do with hanging out all night, sweating my ass off, and only replacing those fluids with…you guessed it…beer.
the rest of the "weekend" seemed like it drug on forever. i kept thinking it was about damn time for monday to get here, and i'd still have a day or two left. and then when monday finally rolled around, elizabeth came back into town and made me go out drinking with her. i can't win…
the royal tenenbaums finally came out on dvd. i ended up watching it with my friend katie tonight, which was really fun. she's one of the millions of girls on the face of the planet that think that luke wilson is the hottest thing since grilled cheese. needless to say, we both enjoyed the movie (my fourth viewing, her third).
scott and i have been devouring veggie burgers like mad, lately. it probably has something to do with this whole "summer" thing we're currently stuck in the middle of, but who knows. we've decided on a definite "burger of choice," though…the flame grilled gardenburger. it is, qquite simply, the most delicious slab of vegetarian burger you will ever find. big bonus for scott: they're completely vegan. we recommend them with a1 sauce and pickles. amazing.
i think i need to get back to listening to the ramones…
how wonderful is a friday that happens to fall on wednesday? today was a lazy day (as they all tend to be). i just got back from hanging out over at matt and paul's crib, which was an interesting change of pace. we shot the shit, hung out, and watched some star trek. i think the plans call for us doing some hanging out in some sort of drinking establishment later this evening.
ahhh…the 4th of july…independence day…more reason to slack off than i really need. it's kinda scary to think that everyone is going to go outside tomorrow and blow shit up and preach about how we're gonna pave over the middle east and whatnot. aside from the big barbecue i'm hoping on having tomorrow, i'm not overly excited about the impending holiday. i'm actually getting quite sick of all the blind patriotism i see around me. flag waving rhetoric that's keeping people from taking a long hard look at our own government. it really bothered me to hear people ask "how could they do this to us?" and "what did we ever do to them?" well…i'm not going to sit here and preach the gospel of whatever, but i will say that it's no big surprise that they hate us. take a look, sometime…it's all there. true…terrorism isn't a very constructive way to have your ideals heard and paid attention to. i dont endorse in any way what happened back in september.
but i will say that it was bound to happen. it was just a matter of when. and what are we stuck with now? a halfwit president who gets to make up his own rules as he goes along. and if you don't like it? you're a terrorist. you're with them.
bullshit.
krazy fest was this weekend. i continued my trend of hanging out and not paying for it, which resulted in actually having to work as stage crew yesterday. it was a long hot day in the sun, to say the least. a few bands i was wanting to see actually played the fest, but for the most part i was just there to hang out with all my friends (both from here and out of town).
friday night was pretty low-key. we left when the fest was over and went out to friday's to drink giant mixed drinks. we heard there was a bunch of party going down at a hotel close to where the fest was being held, so we went down there. there ended up being a bunch of people standing around, drinking in the parking lot, but nothing really exciting. we decided to head over to cahoots and see what was happening over there. we hung out at the bar for a little while, but it just wasn't enough party. i ran into a bunch of friends from the skateshop and they decided we should grab some beer, head back to the hotel, and make a party of our own. that turned out to be a pretty fun idea. there's a big patio on the roof, which is where we set up party shop. we ended up hanging out there until the cops showed up. apparently some girl was raped. i guess even the punk kids can't be trusted to be functional, non-disgusting human beings. after that we just drank at my house.
saturday was pretty much insane. after the fest wrapped for the day, we headed over to the warehouse for some party. the cops showed up when there was only about 20 people there. they actually cuffed elizabeth from the reputation, mainly because she told them she was a lawyer and she knew her rights. she learned an important lesson: rights don't mean anything to the police. the cops ended up leaving without arresting anyone, but a bunch of people had already ditched out on the party. so…we decided to take the party back to the hotel from the night before. we ended up back on the balcony, summoning half the people in the hotel for giant party. john dubbed it the "party patio." kevin and i were randomly walking into kids rooms to use the bathroom. we'd just walk in, tell them we had to take a leak, and continue on our way. this went over surprisingly well. kevin handed me his elliott stage pass and kept telling people i was benny. some kid tried to interview me on camera, so i went with it, proclaiming that kevin was our roadie. kevin then said "i let them pee in my butt." after a little while, the cops ended up coming to bust our little party, so we hid out in some kids room and drank all his beer. after the cops split, we went back outside and decided to make it to cahoots for last call.
yesterday was the last day of the fest, and chris and i just worked stage crew and tried to keep hydrated.
in other news…
my review of the new hot snakes record went up on 75 or less.
i am now completely sober and very sore.
as matt mentioned in his l'il post earlier, our dear friend jess has decided to up and move away. she's apparently getting married and now she's living in dallas, texas. well…i have a different perspective than matt and paul, i guess. i've known jess for around the same amount of time, but…i dated her. she and i dated for about 6 months. this was, of course, after knowing her for a few years. we dated and we had a strange relationship, then we broke up (she dumped me), then i promptly moved into the same house as her (the house that i currently share with scott). i think one of the dumbest things i'm guilty of ever doing is dating jess while i was still wrapped up in my prior ex. it strained the relationship and led to my eventual downfall. shortly after me she started dating the guy she's now slated to marry.
to not put too fine a point on it, i'm not entirely thrilled with the whole scenario. i'm not thrilled with her moving half a country away. i'm not thrilled with her not being around whenever i want to hang out. and most of all…i'm not thrilled with her marrying some guy i feel like she's settling for. jess and i have had plenty of in-depth discusssions since our break-up, and most of them centered on how the future hubby isn't what she likes in guys. to put it bluntly, he's kind of a tool. before you start pointing and laughing, realize that this isn't just petty ex-boyfriend jealousy talking. this is honest concern for a girl i've known for eight years. i can't help thinking that it's all a grand mistake. if it still counted for anything, i'd be the guy standing up at the wedding, stating my objections.
i keep feeling like that guy in the jetta commercial.
but if it's a mistake, it's her's to make. so i have to swallow it like the bitter pill it is and go on. i guess this just meanss we won't hook up on a lazy tuesday to catch a movie and eat at thai caf? anymore…
wow. last night was a doozy. it started out with an innocent trip to the back door to hang out with a few friends, and ended up as a no holds barred, full on bar brawl at the karaoke bar down the street. how quickly things can go south…
i was hanging at the bar with a few friends when most of them decided to leave. brendan needed a place to crash, so i offered up the couch. he wanted to cruise down to cahoots, so we headed on down there. i figured we'd hang out there for a while until they closed and then brendan would want to crash. well…when we got there, it was our friend rob's 21st birthday. everyone from the skateshop was hanging out, getting loaded. we drank a bunch and then someone said "let's go down and sing karaoke for the birthday event!" so we polished off our drinks and walked down the block.
when we walked into the karaoke bar, some girl was singing lisa loeb or some shit. we all grabbed some beers, put in a few songs (amongst our picked hits were "sweet child o' mine," "crazy train," and some boyz II men tunes), and settled in while the losers before us took their turns. well…during a frat boy duet of some lame pearl jam song, one of our friends got onstage and started whooping it up during the very end. the frat boys got a little pissy, but the friend apologized and told them that we were just drunk and showing our friend a good time for his birthday. the frat boy relented, but the bartender decided we had had enough to drink and, without a last call, closed the bar down, cutting us off. the dj tried to throw a couple of our friends out, but they refused to leave. some frat boy started a fight with another friend (keep in mind there were about 12 of us in our group) and i ran over to break it up. i got clocked in the back of the head, and i started swinging. people pulled us off the frat boys and everybody started to calm down. until the dj started pulling the mics off the stage, closing up shop…
that's when we all started yelling and screaming. i think the fratty jocks were pissed off because we had been dancing with their girls and now we had the girls screaming with us about the end of karaoke. the next thing you know, they're totally kicking everyone out and some jock thinks it's a wise idea to throw a punch at one of our friends. all of a sudden, the place erupts and the bartender pulls out a tazer and starts nailing my friend with it. i jumped in and got tazed, but i got plenty of shots in before we cleared out of the place. the last thing i remember seeing was the bar in total ruins. we bolted out of there and laid low for the rest of the night. amazingly enough, everyone cleared out before the cops came.
now i'm sitting around, nursing some tazer burns, and reflecting on one of the most insane nights in recent memory.
it's gonna be a great summer…
